First UK hand transplant

The successful hand transplant for former pub landlord Mark Cahill is the latest amazing medical breakthrough in transplant procedures. The 51-year-old recently became the first person in the UK to have a hand transplant, after his own right hand became paralysed when he developed an infection from gout. The team at Leeds General Infirmary has been working closely with colleagues in Lyon, France, where hand transplants were pioneered in 1998. The first-ever recipient in France was New Zealander Clint Hallam, who later had his new hand removed.
